TOUR THE MOST IMPORTANT FORTIFIED CHURCHES IN TRANSYLVANIA
The fortified churches of
Transylvania represent a treasure of history and architecture,
waiting undiscovered now that most of the Saxons have left
Romania. Professional Team wants to rediscover together
with you, a few of the jewels of this treasure. These churches
were constructed for the defence of the catholic Christians
during the Turkish and Tartar invasions.
The fortifications consist of fortified walls around the
perimeter of the churchyard (with one or more concentric
rings), defensive towers, and a shooting gallery in the
roof of the church, which – along with look-out positions
in the church tower – complete a complex defensive
strategy. The church became therefore, both literally and
figuratively speaking, the last (and only) refuge in the
case of the Turkish attacks upon the villages of the Saxons.
Depending on the number of days you have available, we
will arrange together a personalised itinerary that will
reveal the most valuable gems of Saxon architecture – these
impressive fortified churches. In addition we can visit
the medieval sections of Brasov, Sighisoara and Sibiu. |
